Hi everyone!

Bought a 2nd hand AJS CR3 for £100 off some guy who said valves were knackered. Took head off and valves look fine. Need to check valve clearances though. I eventually got it started but it wouldnt rev above 6k.

Came back to it the day after and bike had fallen over in the night and I cant start it at all. Plug out and its sparking. dismantled carb and cleaned jets out. looks like the main jet says cg125 on it and im thinking thats too big? also the idle jet was loose and in the reservoir. Anyway i got it to fire a few times but would never start. Any help would be great cheers!

With it falling over, it may have flooded the engine ?
Try kicking it over 4 or 5 times with the throttle held wide open (full throttle)
This should clear any fuel in the manifold and cylinder.
Try starting it after doing this with no throttle.



Do you have a decent spark plug, like an NGK ?

You are right about the Idle/pilot jet, it should be screwed into the carby base.

When you pulled the carby down did you remove the main and pilot jets and clean the holes through the middle of them ?
Sometimes they can gum up, and restrict the flow, you can hardly see the gum, maybe take them out and poke a strand of copper wire through them, and any holes that run across the jets too.
Where the pilot jet screws into in the base of the carby, down the bottom of the thread's/hole there is a tiny hole that goes through into the carbys' main bore.
If this hole is blocked then it can make your bike hard to start.
Also the brass emulsion tube/needle jet where the main jet screws into, can have blocked up holes too.
Unscrew it from the carby and take it out, there is a main hole up through the middle of it, plus maybe 8 - 16 smaller holes across it.
Make sure they are all open and free of debris/dirt/gum etc.
And where it screw's into needs to be clean as well.
While you have the jets out, take the mixture screw and spring out and check for dirt in there too.
But before removing it, slowly screw it back into the carby until it lightly nips up tight, take note of how many full turns it takes till it starts to get tight, eg 1.75 full turns or 2 full turns etc.
When you refit the mixture screw and spring, set it to the setting it was at before you removed it, eg 1.75 or 2 full turns out.

While the the carby is still apart, give it a good blow through with compressed air and a blow gun, especially the 2 or 3 small ports on the air filter side of the carb.
You should be able to feel air coming out one of the jet holes in the base of the carby as you blow it through the intake port

And lastly check that the air filter is clean, and lightly oiled.
Once you are happy the carby is all clean, and the jets are clear, reassemble and refit the carb.

Try it out and see how it goes, and let us know what it's doing.
Note what and where the problem is and we can help you solve it.
eg, hesitates at take off, bike dies at 3/4 to full throttle then comes good after a bit etc etc
