Loud Tinging Engine noises

Hey all ,
Just wondering if anyone would know what is wrong with me 1980somethin PW80? Was ridin it around today...and its been pretty f'ed for a while (but it still does like 60K's haha) The engine makes a loud tinging noise whenever i try to rev it out too much, Sounds like a rock in the engine floating around, But im guessing its the piston ring?? Maybe?? ne ways its been fine riding it like that for a while, but i was riding it up some pretty steep hills today and now i can only do like 5k's before it starts to splatter and the engine noise goes loud..
So to fix the problem...do i need a new piston & ring? or is it something else?
Any suggestions will be appreciated!!!

by the sounds of it, cracked ring... pull the top end down and see what you're up against, i'd say it's time for a top end rebuild...
