Mixture screw?

Hey I am wondering how do i know when my mixture screw is screwed too far in or too far out? What should i be looking for when screwing the mixture screw? I am trying to figure out what all the mixture screw does..

it will keep screwing in until it won't go any further and it will screw all the way out, but that's a bad idea cause it will just fall out then. ideally you want it some where in the middle, if it is not tuned properly and you find your screw it all the way in or out then the jets may need to be changed.
