hey guys does any1 know what subject i and courses i have to do to get into pyrotechnics?? do i have to go to uni aswell? does any1 know if i can do an aprentiship and can you do it through school? i dont think you can but would like to check. i have emailed a few pyrotechnic companys and havnt had a reply yet but it was only a few days ago... any help would be apreciated. i have been searching the ne wit no real result:(
cheers matt

You probably wont get a reply from them until early next year because this is their busy season. Interesting career choice but unfortunately I dont know much about it so it would be best to talk to someone in the industry about the best way to get into it.

Good luck and let us know how you go.

yer well im only goin into grade 10 atm but i thort i want to do everything i need to da at school and do a few uni corses instead of missing things at school and having to do them later. but il keep yu posted wit any info i get back from them:) and i diddnt even think bout there seasons lol coming up to new years lol so thanx

Mattbombers, when you say pyrotechnics can you be a bit more specific as to what you actually want to do?

Do you want to work in development and research?
Production?
Design for performance?
Or do you want to work in performance itself?

What basic area you want to work in will dictate the needed qualifications.
It all science based, but each area is different.

Are you also interested in industrial applications or only performance?

Chemistry, physics, applied mathematics and any IT subjects would be what I'd be taking for the last years of High School I'd reckon. So I hope you like studying! lol

Matt, that's what I was getting at. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure these days it's a lot more specialised than that.

The dude designing the performance is not necessarily the same dude that is orchestrating the performance as it happens. But in some cases it may be.

For example, on one of my music DVD's, in the crew credits, there was pyro designers and pyro techs. (I checked this cos your question got me interested!)

If you're looking to make a full time career out of it, you are probably looking at larger scale stuff in Australia as the use of pyrotechnics is so tightly regulated.

The larger scale stuff would be designed using computer models with a basis on physics principles I'd assume.

I couldn't find anything anywhere on courses in pyrotechnics. I'd hazard a guess that there is not too many people in full time employment in that industry in Australia.

But if you stick to your maths and science and IT subjects you should be fine. (IT for design and you'll find most of the performance is operated through computer systems.) Chemistry is the big one because after all that's exactly what pyro is... chemical reactions.

A lot of it may be industry based training as opposed to formal courses. But I'd assume there would have to be some type of science background required.

This is what I sort of knew off the top of my head and what I could find by having a quick look.

Happy to be corrected if I'm way off the mark.:)

just had a look cause ya got me interested found this, its an application form to obtain a license had a quick flick through, and theres a bit of info in it

read on another forum that you need to work with a contractor for 12 months before you can apply as well, dont know if thats true, just what i read.

Explosives Training Australia - Professional_fireworks_training

some site about training

What degree should I get for pyrotechnics? - Yahoo!7 Answers

hope this helps you out abit,

should be a really good career to get into

pretty cool idea matt, i wish i'd thought of doing that before i started uni :p !!

anyway man like skylar said, you'd probably need to study chemistry, physics and probably maths, but definately dont take our word for it! double check with as many companies as possible dude.

just try not to act like a pyromaniac when your approaching these people!

anyway man best of luck :)
