rear shock valve

hey everyone this may be a really dumb question but ive been dying to find out. on the rear shocks that arnt gas adjustable why is there a valve there? like i thought it could be for an aftermarket gas adjustable thing but yea im kinda stupid. hope someone can help me out here. :)

its so you can put air in your shock to either make it stiffer...o u canlet arout to make it softer. some shocks dont have a valve that you can see...but if you pull the shock apart there is likely to be a valve on the top of the shock
 
...put Nitrogene inside...keeps your shock better in check;)
 
so if you let the air out it gets softer???
my shock had perfect rebound until i let whatever it was that was in there out.....i want my shock softer....its a fastace but its stiff, whats goin on?
 
it might have a 1000lb spring...if you plan on doing jumps trust me...you want it stiff...but if its a cruizin bike you might want to get a softer back spring
