Hey guys,

I have been interested in machining for a while, and i was wondering if anyone on MRs machines there own parts or does it for a living. I would like to see what you make.

I am also looking into getting some welding and machinig gear. What do you recomend for a hobby lathe or mill (brands and best place to buy). Nothing too expensive, like second handies.

finding a good second hand welder is very hard to come by without spending a small fortune.

i'd be interested in getting some stuff done also if anyone does or knows of people that do it..

I am a toolmaker by trade, specialising in CNC.

i generally operate a 3 axis CNC mill, but currently the 30,000 RPM spindle is shagged and we are looking at $10,500 for a changeover unit.

also have access to mills, lathes, surface grinders, EDM's and the rest of the gear that normally comes with an engineering shop...

i do make bits and pieces to order (as long as its kept quiet) and am happy to help out.

I really want to start to make pitbike parts. Like billet swingarm spacers, axel blocks and other little bling bits. :)

one word of advice,do your maths before you offer things....

there is no way in hell that anyone in australia can match prices coming from china for parts, yeah it may look better and work longer but majority of the population dont wanna pay for it.

eg, i make a custom sprocket, 32 tooth z50 for example, raw material cost is about $16, 1 hour to program and set up the cnc, 2 hours of machining (including a jig to locate and cut both sides of sprocket for tooth entry angle) and i get told $65 is too expensive!!!!

so in conclusion, make sure people are willing to pay for the bits you are going to spend hours making.

sorry, thats my rant...

yep banana that's the problem with some of ours members in my opinion ...they know the price of everything but the value of nothing .

Im looking into it as a hobby, hoping to get a taste of it as i might be doing an engineering/welding course.

Gotta have a niche item, unique and then you stand a chance of earning what your time's worth. Billet wheel spacers, nah. Billet cranks, maybe;)

I have machined some parts for my bike. I have made a set of custom engine covers, some aluminum wheel spacers, a mount for a spin on oil filter, and some other odds and ends. Just something to do with my free time at work.l
