Rear shock size?

Quick question. Can you fit different size rear shock? a 360mm eye to eye rear shock with one that is 300mm or 320mm? What problems will I have?

it will raise or lower the bike depending on what way you go.
if it's a linkage type setup it may cause it to lock up at some point.
60mm change in length may lower or raise some bikes 150mm...
