on the tacho there are usually 4 wires.

Black: Goes to Ground (-). Put the Negative (-) of the Battery to Ground.

Red: Goes to Battery Positive (+). To power the Tacho Instrument.

White: Goes to Battery Positive (+). To power the Backlight of the Tacho.

Green: Positive (+) side of Ignition Coil. To pick up the frequency of the spark.

Cheers!!

If any of you are handy with a soldering iron Jaycar sell a nifty looking tacho kit for $63 ... bit pricey but looks quite good, and I assume it could be run off a 9V battery..

normal car ones are generally designed for 4/6/8 cylinders so it wont work.
I got this 52mm one off ebay, only problem is it goes all the way up the 16,000 RPM and most minibikes only get 8,000.

Wiring is easy as, green wire goes on the coil, black earth, red power (9v battery or 12v reg)

I've found having a tacho on a dirtbike is pretty useless lol but whatever
