What the... gearbox acting up

There are sliding gears that have a slotted ring that the shift fork sits in with dog lugs sticking out of the side of the gear . When you shift gears the shift drum rotates and pushes the shift forks sideways .... pulling one set of gears out of engagement and engaging the next ratio . The dog lugs are pushed towards the next gear and if the clutch is pulled in ..... the gears can match speed quickly and the dogs can pop into the oval slots on the selected gear without copping any impact ..... if the gear speeds are too far out .... the dogs skip across the slots and won't go into the next gear until the respective gear speeds are close enough . If there is drive or load on the mainshaft ...... the edges of the dogs can catch violently on the edges of the slots ...... creating an impact while they are in a vulnerable position ..... the force is similar to smashing them hard with a lump hammer and can most certainly bust them off in a split second ......... abused wide ratio trannies are highly likely to have that happen to them ....... that's why in some trucks with wide ratio gears they double shuffle the clutch to avoid expensive gear damage ........ what it really does is slow down how quick you're shifting to give the gears a chance to synchronise ..... fully engage and align with each other before they cop a load ........

It's definitely the riders fault if a gearbox breaks ........ these engines were originally 50 to 100 based and in a low state of tune ........ the trannies were designed for use with auto clutches which absorb shock and impacts and shift at a set rate ....... the engines are producing nearly double the torque that the boxes were designed to handle so you have to treat them with respect ........ or pay the price ............

Yeah they dont heat treat them properly so they're weak I think.
