Do what everyone else does, get into IT. Just don't go into support, that's where the headaches reside. Incidentally, I'm the support manager for a web development company ;)

Everyone seems to think that IT is only support or sys admin, don't let em fool ya!

thats a good idea seen a couple of em make decent coin for what they do during the day and it wouldnt be hard to get the certs required to get a decent job in it..
Web development is some interesting work sometimes unless your just working on basic template sites :)
 
Yeah, you need to get in with a company that pulls decent contracts or make a name for doing some solid dev work. Other areas to look into are:
Service delivery - The middle man between the tech heads and the client.
Tech Sales - The most respected salesperson, dependent on a solid technical background.
Business Administration - Not necessarily IT specialised, sounds less interesting than it is.

Get your foot in the door with a big company though a Service Desk position and work your arse off ;)

Sys admin is where it's at. Massive call for good admins and can get some big money IF your any good. Systems Engineer is even better.

Stay away from anything networking. Stuff all jobs and unless you have a very high level of certification you won't get paid much.

Getting those certifications is not as easy as you may think.... Your Microsoft certs are actually pretty damn challenging. They are not like high school exams. You are expected to know a lot.

I started on Helpdesk but only did it for a year before moving into Sys Admin. I loved it and did it for 7 years. Pay was good too. Only been the last couple of years I have moved into a project management role and now an Operations and Infrastructure Manager.

Definitely a good industry to get into.
 
Used to the the Group eCommerce and eBusiness Manager for 32 companies and sat on Board of Company.

Now i'm the GM or a large manufacturing company.

At times wouldn't mind going back to old role

That's a pretty impressive resume there mate.

I sit on an Ecommerce steering committee in my current role.

If your a GM the I want to see your bikes as I'm sure they are wicked!! ;)

I used to own this to but it now lives in Europe (Derek Costellas Factory bike)

I have another DOHC bike coming from states at the moment but i'll keep that one for later haha.

The eCommerce stuff was good, i miss it but nothing has come up that interests me in NSW, maybe VIC is different

Far out mate that is one of the sweeetest bikes I have seen. Pretty sure Shearer would be drooling looking at this like me.

I'd have to find the one that came with it, but it had best of everything and cost me a small fortune but sold for what it owed me
 
Okay loving my job at the moment, wrapping team honda (dirt racing teams) truck and ofcause trying to talk to as many of them as possible and check out the bikes as i do :)

Hey guys I'm pretty new around here! Just bought my first two pit bikes :D love em to pieces.

I run a small business called Stuart Thomas Horticulture! I love gardens, working hard and being outside...If you have any questions about gardens hit me up for sure! I'm asking enough questions about bikes so its the best I can do! This is the epic hedge(well my nickname for this property anyway)...it takes over an hour to do this whole hedge, the yard is amazing though. It stays about 10 degrees cooler than the air temperature because there is a massive deciduous tree in the back yard! Plants are really cool! DSC_0138.jpg

027.JPGOccupational health and safety officer with a big land surveying company. That involves writing safety and traffic management plans, travelling all over Victoria and measuring stuff. It's a great job. Like Stu I was a self employed gardener for 12 years but I managed to stuff my back so bad I couldn't physically work in my business for the last 2 years and ended up having major surgery and selling the business. While I was recovering I did a degree in OH&S and haven't looked back.
 
Asset inspector. Basically excavate around base of power poles, make sure it isnt infested with termites or completely rotted out and going to fall on someones house or car (happens more than you would know). Have worked everywhere from the western/northern/eastern suburbs of Melbourne to Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane doing this job over the last 11 years. The job used to be pretty simple but distribution business' are wanting more information on their assets everyday so we use image stabilizing binoculars, pole mounted cameras and expensive camera equipment to record hardware and defects on pole top structures and sub stations etc.

Pretty good pay for a semi skilled job. We get to change around a fair bit from suburban work to regional work. The work itself is pretty monotonous but the scenery is always changing as we work on a 4 to 5 year cycle. Get to work with a few mates which is a plus as well.

Yeah my number 1 goal these days is NOT getting hurt! I've had way to many riding injuries as it is....5 broken wrists, collar bone, feet 3 times, dislocated ankle etc etc. I love working outside but I try to do things as ergonomically correctly as possible or I'll destroy myself permanently!! I think I could do that job, I basically quit my last job because they didnt care about safety....I was going to retire at the council but OH&S is a growing business, maybe I should get into my own thing later on training others in OH&S....check my video post out in the video section http://www.miniriders.com/videos/40078-doing-my-community-service.html

You'll probably pick up a few bad ones in that....
 
grew up on a dry land farm, worked at engineering shops, mechanic by trade, now working fifo in the gas n oil feilds driving vacuum semis, and doing high pressure water jetting.
